Palacký University in Olomouc

The scientific and research activities of the Institute of Special Education Studies of the Faculty of Education at Palacký University in Olomouc has long been focused on the field of Czech Sign Language and it has produced more than 20 sign language dictionaries used widely by both professional and non-professional public in the context of primary, secondary and tertiary education.

Intense collaboration between MU and the partner facility dates back to 2005, and the two institutions have worked in close cooperation while partners in the realization of the ESF projects Universal Learning Design - Innovations in Interpreting and Communication Services (ComIn) and Language Handicap Elimination for Hearing Impaired Students via Automatic Language Processing.

For the cooperation on the current project, the input material will be provided in the form of online dictionaries of Czech and Czech Sign Language created in  two projects that are currently approaching their conclusion: POJABR (the principal investigator is the UWB in Pilsen; the project involves the creation of a web dictionary application enabling its users to insert a video recording, detect the bounds of an individual sign automatically, including the presentation of signs via videos, avatars and HamNoSys) and ComIn (the  principal investigator is MU; its outputs include among other things a web application offering an exact linguistic description of CSL signs and the Czech language that can be used both as a monolingual dictionary and a dictionary for translation, with presentation using video recordings and the sign language notation system SignWriting).

Based on the existing cooperation, the investigators of both projects have arranged to compare and (as far as possible) merge the outputs of both projects starting June 2012 and to develop the newly created application as a nationwide archive documenting both languages used in Czech tertiary education.
