History of Blind football at MU

Teiresias Centre and its staff started to engage systematically in Blind football classes in autumn 2008. Thanks to the suggestion of two visually impaired students Matěj Plcha and Jakub Starek a delegation of several employees and students of Masaryk University participated in a seminar on Blind football in Olomouc which took place on 21 June 2008 (for more information on the seminar see the current events' page)). The seminar was lead by the Brazilian graduate of the Faculty of Physical Culture of Palacký University in Olomouc Mgr. Gabriel Mayr, who shared his experience with training Blind football sportsmen and offered a partnership aimed at the development of this sport in the Czech Republic.

The beginnings of Blind football classes

Three months later a group of ten visually impaired students and ten coaches and guides from MU started regular training sessions in the big gym at Vinařská 5 in Brno.

Specific aspects of teaching blind football

Blind football, as a paralympic sport, follows the rules set by the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA). Before the classes started, the students were informed about the rules and were given all the important instructions, particularly concerning safety not only during the training but also during matches.

After the theoretical preparation the students familiarised themselves with the gym and they practised orientation skills in the whole building of the gym, too. Afterwards they started the training of the following specific skills which are highly important for visually impaired sportsmen:

  1. Space orientation
  2. Practice of the correct coordination of different types of movements
  3. Use of voice signalization in order to minimise clashes of players and to navigate the player on the field
  4. Different types of work with the ball – accepting passes, ball controlling, shooting etc.
  5. Tactical preparation of the players
  6. Teamwork practice
