Physical education at Masaryk University for students with special needs

The Teiresiás Centre offers physical education classes for students of Masaryk University with sensory and motor disabilities. Besides courses of physical education that run regularly or are taught in all-day classes, the University Sport Centre at the Faculty of Sports Studies (CUS FSpS) also offers summer and winter training courses.

The most common way of helping the students is personal assistance, the form of which depends on the individual needs of the students and the nature of the sport activity they wish to engage in. One of the difficulties encountered by students is a communication barrier between them, other students and the instructors. Mostly this concerns students with hearing impairment; the assistant's role, then, is to facilitate communication: he translates to and from the sign language.

Physical education is available to students with visual impairment as well. An assistant is available for the student; his task is to accompany him on the way to and from the sport facility and help him acquaint himself with the place, he can be also present in the lessons and see to it that the student is fully involved.

Students with physical disabilities are provided assistance according to their individual needs, which vary depending on the nature of their disabilities.

Physical education courses organized by the Teiresiás Centre

Besides the array of subjects offered by the CUS FSpS, students of Masaryk University with sensory and motor disabilities may enroll in courses organized by the Teiresiás Centre. The content and structure of the lessons is different from the courses at CUS FSpS; sometimes special methods are employed to make the lesson suitable for students with disabilities.

An example of that is Swimming for students with physical disabilities, which used Halliwick method in the past, but later a method developed in the non-profit organization KONTAKT bB, called Aqua (E)Motion Therapy, was adopted. The lessons now employ a form of this method referred to as "KONEV" (developed by a paralympic winner Martin Kovář and his coach Jan Nevrkla). Another course designated for students with disabilities is Futsal for visually impaired, in which much attention is paid to aspects that are often neglected in traditional lessons, such as spatial orientation and practice of motor skills.
